Better than Perfect by Permetaform (Kakashi/Naruto | NC-17)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Kakashi/Naruto
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: ~4,000
Warnings: genderbending - Naruto is in Sexy Jutsu form for the majority of this encounter
Author: Permetaform
Website: the author on ff.net
Summary: Wherein Naruto has a scheme to remove Kakashi's mask, and Kakashi plays a game of gay chicken (he cheats).
Why: I've never really found the Kakashi/Naruto pairing appealing before, but the concept of SexyJutsu!Naruto (pretending to be a callgirl, no less) facing off against Kakashi, of all people, left open possibilities that I was too curious to pass up. With any other character than Kakashi in this situation, you might be able to predict the outcome. Kakashi, however, is far more unpredictable, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to find out his reaction to this situation. I wasn't expecting very much though; this is a plot that would be far too easy to do wrong, and very difficult to do right.

To my great surprise, I highly enjoyed the story. (In truth, I was so surprised that I had to read it again on a different day before I decided that it really was as good as I'd originally thought.) Permetaform really nailed the characterization of both Kakashi and Naruto, and then went a step further and created enough convincing emotion between the two of them to also completely convince me of the pairing.

If you're still not convinced, here's an excerpt, from the beginning of the story:

Haven by Toffee (Gaara/Naruto | NC-17)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Gaara/Naruto
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: 22,500
Spoilers for: post-timeskip Gaara arc
Author: crazy_toffee
Website: none?
Summary: Temari wasn’t entirely honest when she sought Naruto’s help. She said Gaara had been missing for a few days, but he’d been missing for a few weeks...
Why: This has been next on my to-rec list for a while, but I've been skipping over it. You see, the problem is that this is the best Naruto fic I've read in a while. It completely knocked my socks off and now I don't know what I can say to do it credit. Still, I guess I'll just have to do my best. The first thing I loved about this story was the mood that the author creates: quiet, melancholy, full of longing. The second was probably the emotional intensity. Naruto and Gaara are both pretty intense in their emotions, and the author did a wonderful job of capturing that. Third was the way that intensity pulled me into the story; once I started reading, I just couldn't stop. Fourth, the characterization in general is amazing. Even though this is a Gaara/Naruto fic, the author is a Naruto/Sasuke fan, so she really works hard to convince you of the Gaara/Naruto. At the same time, she doesn't discount the depth of the connection between Naruto and Sasuke, which I really appreciated. I also particularly loved Naruto's emotional progression in this story. It really reminded me of just how much I love him. I just...there are so many things right with this story that I'm never going to be able to tell you all of what makes it amazing. It's really that good.

Green Apple Elixir and Sugared Vanilla by Ronsard (PG-13)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Ino/Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: ~6,100
Author: Ronsard
Website: Ronsard's fic list
Summary: In which everyone in Konoha has relationship problems, and Naruto and Ino may just turn out to be the most well-adjusted of them all.
Why: The first thing that drew me to this story was the idea of Naruto and Ino being the most well-adjusted of them all. I have to admit, that intrigued me, even though it's a pairing I never thought I would read with one of the two main characters being someone I'm not too fond of. What kept me reading was that Ronsard really makes this pairing work. Sure, parts of it are silly, but other parts of it are just perfect for both characters. I loved the idea of Ino being the one to corrupt Naruto, and the way that the author never loses sight of the fact that no matter how much Naruto and Ino complain, they are always there when their friends need them. Most of all, I loved how sweet the romance between Ino and Naruto is, and the way that it kind of creeps up on you until you realize, "Yes, that's just exactly right."

Mission Troublesome by Penelope-Z (PG-13)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Shikamaru/Temari, Sasuke/Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 4,100
Author: Penelope-Z
Website: Penelope-Z on Ff.net
Summary: During a diplomatic mission to Suna, Naruto and Sasuke discovertheir hormones, the Kazekage discovers he is rather annoyed by thisdevelopment, Sai discovers dog curry and Shikamaru discovers he standsalone as the sole pillar of common sense, against the rest of theworld. While wearing Temari’s skirt.
Why: The summary pretty much says it all. Penelope-Z writes brilliant crack with one-liners that a lot of writers (like myself) would love to be able to produce. I laughed like crazy reading this. Definitely one of the best Naruto fics I've read recently.

Naruto World Facts of Life by Sadieko (PG-13)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: ensemble with various pairings, mostly yaoi, but some het
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 4,800
Author: Sadieko
Website: In Process
Summary: A series of vignettes taking all the Naruto fic cliches and turning them on their heads.
Why: There are about 15 of these, and they're short, which I usually find to be kind of a downside, but these work beautifully at just this length. They take some of the more prominent cliches in the Naruto fandom, and they basically debunk them by showing what would actually happen. I think my favorites have to do with Iruka, simply because his girlification by some fans drives me up the wall, but there are a lot of good ones here.

water displacement by two_if_by_sea (G)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Gaara/Naruto
Rating: G
Wordcount: 1,600
Author: two_if_by_sea
Website: Fic Memories
Summary: Sand Country smells of sand and chlorine all the time.
Why: I'm almost afraid to write a rec for this. You see, I just finished reading it, and it put me into a gentle, dreamy sort of mood that I'm sure the reality of my words is going to crush it. It's made up of gorgeous sensory imagery, lost Gaara, and rain. It's the kind of thing that I read and then despair about my own ability to write anything descriptive or introspective that could ever compare. I'm really at a loss for a way to tell you just how amazing this is, so perhaps you'd better just read it and find out.

Wordcount: ~700

Why: Sasuke's approach to 'wooing' Naruto is simply priceless, and the ending teleports this from the realm of highly amusing to amazing.

Suspicious Behavior by Kaeda (PG-13)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Sasuke/Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 3,302
Author: saucy_kate
Website: Kaeda
Summary: In which Naruto trips over Sasuke, Sasuke turns various different colors, and there is a lot of arguing over the size of crushes. Now with 40% more insults!
Why: I can so see Naruto and Sasuke being like this: Sasuke won't say it, but you know it's true, and anyway, Naruto says it loud enough for both of them. Kaeda really does a great job of capturing both their personalities. Oh, and there are some great lines in here!

And Every Dog Will Have Its Day by Penelope-Z (PG-13)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Sasuke/Naruto, Kiba/Shino
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: ~3,600
Spoilers for: slight post-timeskip spoilers
Author: Penelope-Z
Website: Penelope-Z on Ff.net
Summary: Apparently the rumour first originated from Sakura, who gossiped to Ino, who told Chouji, who in turn mentioned it to Hinata in an attempt to distract her from the bag of crisps she was eating at the time.
Why: Penelope-Z does some really amazing crack fic. I think I spent the entirety of this fic either snickering to myself or resisting the urge to reach into the computer screen and smack Kiba on the head (possibly while still making noises which vaguely resembled snickers). Just thinking about this story is enough to bring a smile to my face. In fact, I'm so busy smiling that I can't think of anything coherent to say about this, so here, have an excerpt:

“You know, out of all people in our year, you and Shino remind me of Naruto and Sasuke the most.” Shikamaru mused, raising a thoughtful eyebrow.

“Um,” Kiba said eloquently, suddenly sobering up, as he was caught in a vision of an alternative universe where heartthrob Shino, the last-of-the-Aburame avenger, cackled evilly, as his bugs darkened the sky over Konoha, while Kiba, the village idiot, faced him off with a huge spray can of DDT. His brain attempted to make sense of it, exploded in the process, and gently leaked out of his ears.
