The Wink by Golden meliades (Kyoko/Ren | PG-13)

Fandom: Skip Beat!
Pairings/Characters: Kyoko/Ren
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 5,218
Author: pomme_de_miel
Website: Golden meliades on Ff.net
Summary: Why does Kyoko have to do her first-ever photo shoot in a bikini, of all things? And why won't Ren quit teasing her? It's an embarrassing day for Kyoko.
Why: I have to admit, I get a lot of amusement out of how oblivious Kyoko is to how Ren actually feels about her, and one of the great things about this fic is that it plays right into that amusement. The author also does a really great job of capturing Kyoko, by turns silly and serious, and always more powerful and special than she thinks she is, and her relationship with Ren.

Five Times They Kissed by worblehat (Koizumi/Otani | PG-13)

Fandom: Lovely Complex
Pairings/Characters: Koizumi/Otani
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 3,133
Author: worblehat
Website: worblehat's memories
Summary: "Five times Otani kissed Koizumi."
Why: I have to admit, I kind of adore this couple, and worblehat does a wonderful job of capturing them in all their teen-aged glory. I like that this is mostly from Otani's point of view, since the anime (which is all I've seen so far) is so much from Risa's point of view. It is a bit AU since it was written a while ago, but when it's so cute, how can you complain?

To Follow Your Heart by Florahart (Pansy/Percy | NC-17)

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings/Characters: Pansy/Percy
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: ~11,000
Author: Florahart on IJ
Website: Florahart on LJ
Summary: In which Percy is not gay, Pansy has a problem with a compulsion, and they work things out together.
Why: If you've ever read anything by Florahart before, you probably know exactly what to expect, even without actually reading the story. However, in the unlikely eventuality that Florahart is new to you, let me tell you what you'll find here. Even though the pairing may seem implausible, this story is well-written and clever, with a believable relationship that develops between the two characters. And speaking of the characters, they are nicely characterized, and the dialogue between them is snappy and sparkling. Even if you don't particularly care for one of the characters (as I don't particularly care for Pansy), I'd suggest giving this a try because I bet that you'll be drawn in and end up enjoying yourself. After all, that's just the kind of author Florahart is. :)

Legacy by Nymbis (Gen | PG)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairings/Characters: Sandaime, Asuma, Konohamaru
Rating: PG
Wordcount: ~2,000
Spoilers for: Asuma, post-timeskip
Author: digthenym
Website: Nymbis on Ff.net
Summary: The men of Sarutobi have a long history of nicotine addiction, facial hair, and death in the battlefield. Konohamaru shaves each and every morning.
Why: This is a beautifully written look at the Sarutobi men, starting with the Sandaime, then going down to Asuma and his younger brother, and finally stopping at Konohamaru. It was interesting seeing the cycle that the Sarutobi family had developed, and even better seeing Konohamaru's reaction to that cycle, which is just what you might expect from him. I have to say, I like Konohamaru a lot better after reading this story.

Summary: He had been smarter before, hadn't he?
Why: This fic cracks me up. It's exactly the kind of comedy of errors that you might expect from Yankumi and Shin, and it is absolutely hilarious. And there's really nothing else I can say except for "Go read it now!!"

Porcelain by queenzulu (Gen | PG-13)

Fandom: House
Pairings/Characters: Cuddy, House
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 3,000
Spoilers for: Three Stories
Author: queenzulu
Website: Panfandom
Summary: What if Cuddy had been the injured doctor and House had the choice to make?
Why: Oh, man. What do I say to convey to you how awesome this fic is?

First, look at that summary again. Yeah, I know that I'm kind of addicted to the 'what if' brand of AU, but seriously, how can you not be intrigued by the idea of House and Cuddy switching places? How would things be different? Part of the reason House can make his insane decisions is precisely because he doesn't get close to his patients. So what happens when you throw this kind of situation at him, when it's someone he's friends with and maybe even cares about beyond friendship? Clearly, it's an idea with a lot of possibilities.

Stylistically, this story is also amazing. It's written in 2nd person, which I don't usually like, but it works beautifully here. The author has a gorgeous lyrical style that draws you in and refuses to let you go. I think that I would read just about anything, as long as it was written in this style.

Finally, the characterization is wonderful. The author has clearly thought long and hard about what would change if you turned the situation like this, and the result is perfectly drawn. I was completely convinced: Yes, this is what House would do; Yes, that is how Cuddy would feel.

In short, I really don't think that this concept could have been better executed by anyone else. This is an amazing story and if you have any interest in the House fandom at all, I suggest you go read it right now.

Fandom: Yugioh
Pairings/Characters: Joey/Yugi
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: ~350
Author: Cody Nelson
Website: Rat and Fox
Summary: Joey loves Yugi. But not that way.
Why: I like this for its simplicity and because for some reason, I enjoy reading about characters who are in denial far more than I really should. Not to mention that Joey/Yugi is rare, and so I have to treasure it when I find it. ;)

Keep Talking by E. E. Beck (Gen | PG-13)

Fandom: Vorkosigan
Pairings/Characters: Gregor, Cordelia, Aral
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 3,179
Author: E. E. Beck
Website: But There's a Devil in the Looking Glass
Summary: Four times Cordelia stepped in for Princess Kareen as Gregor's mother. In her own inimitable way.
Why: When it comes to the Vorkosigan series, my focus tends to be on Miles and Ivan. Gregor is one of those characters who tends to fall by the wayside with me. That's why I need fics like this, to point out when I'm being stupid and ignoring something amazing. In this case, it's the relationship between Cordelia and Gregor. To make up for my lack of attention, E. E. Beck does an absolutely spectacular job with it in these four scenes. This is one of those stories that has been entered into my personal canon, and if you read it I think you'll find the same happening to you.

My Stranger, My Son by Betula (Gen | G)

Fandom: Hikaru no Go
Pairings/Characters: Hikaru, his father
Rating: G
Wordcount: 1,922
Author: betulaleafminer
Website: none
Summary: Hikaru's father, on the subject of his son.
Why: I'm kind of a sucker for stories that look at the characters I love from an outside perspective, so it's probably no surprise that I was interested in a story from the point of view of Hikaru's father, a man who I have absolutely no memory of in the actual series. And such it's such a good story, it should also be no surprise that I'm reccing it now. Betula does a great job of showing the way that we're sometimes blind to the things that are closest to us. I loved the realization of Hikaru's father of just how much he doesn't know about his son. Even more than that, I love the reaction that he has to this revelation. I only wish we could have seen something like this in the actual series.

"Discussing Heero Yuy - 206 AC" by Anria Lalumin (1x2 | PG)

Fandom: Gundam Wing
Pairings/Characters: Duo/Heero
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 1,156
Author: almighty_frog on insanejournal
Website: Pharmakon
Summary: "Now, children, we're going on a very special visit today. We're going to visit the grave of Heero Yuy, the man who saved the Earth and the colonies twice, and gave his life doing so."
Why: OK, I'll admit it. This story is a whole lot of wish fulfillment, at least as far as I'm concerned, but I'm honestly ok with that. Because seriously, if Heero's going to die and have schoolchildren learning about him, Duo damn well better show up and set them all straight about the real Heero Yuy. Of course, I'd much prefer Heero alive, but if he's going to be dead, well, this is the way I want it to be.

Rating: G
Wordcount: 1,000
Author: capncosmo
Website: The Paradigm of Misspelling
Summary: Trying to get to bottom of how all this started is a little more difficult than you might imagine.
Why: I like the format of this story, and the way that it takes an attention-catching first moment and then traces things back to the beginning through an amusing stream of events. It's kind of like a snapshot of the relationship between Takuya and Tarou over time.

Why: There's something amazing about stories like this, which focus on slices of such everyday happiness and yet manage to be so completely captivating. Five Arrangements: A Love Story by capncosmo (Takuya/Tarou | PG)

Fandom: Yamada Tarou Monogatari
Pairings/Characters: Takuya/Tarou, Takuya's grandfather
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 1,180
Author: capncosmo
Website: The Paradigm of Misspelling
Summary: Takuya is lost when it comes to his two most important people.
Why: I love the way that the author tells a story through Takuya's flower arrangements because even though it's a pretty big part of Takuya, this is the first time I've really seen it used in a fic. Also, even though I usually like longer and more connected formats, somehow the bite-sized format that the author uses here works perfectly for this story. My only possible complaint about this story is that I really wish I could find some more like it!

Summary: Ping nods, and at this he's fast and nimble, and soon his stance is prepared, expression collected though his breathing still translates the nerves he feels.
Why: I really liked the mood and flow of this story. It's short, but it does a spectacular job of capturing Shang's character and getting inside his head to show us just what he's thinking.

Kin of the Heart by litgal (pre-Angel/Xander | PG-13)

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairings/Characters: pre-Angel/Xander-ish
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: ~146,000
Author: lit-gal
Website: Litgal's fanfic
Summary: When Xander has a little heart to heart with Angel, he inadvertantly changes the world by sharing a few truths. The most significant changeis a slowly building relationship between Angel and the boy who taught him a few unpleasant truths about destiny and morality.
Why: First, pairing clarification. This story is, strictly speaking, gen. It features a relationship between Angel and Xander that generally fits into the mentor category, and not the love interest category. However, there are definitely moments where, if you're not comfortable with the idea of an Angel/Xander pairing, you're going to be pretty uncomfortable. This story reads like it's leading to Angel/Xander, even if it never actually happens. So if that's not your pairing of choice, be forewarned. (And likewise, if it is your pairing of choice, please note that you're probably going to be screaming in agony when it ends without getting them together.)

That said, this story kind of ate my brain for a couple of days. It takes on the idea that Angel was so busy idealizing Buffy in the beginning that he never actually realized who and what she was: a teenage girl. This story starts with Xander pointing out that little fact, and then looks at the relationship that develops between Angel and Xander from there. I really love the way that Litgal used this one event to start so many ripples going. It was really fascinating for me to see where things changed and where they stayed the same. I got a huge kick out of the relationship between Angel and Xander. Even though it felt awkwardly in-between in some respects, it worked perfectly for the story that Litgal was telling. I also really liked the moral issues that got brought up throughout the story, as Litgal had some points to make that had never occurred to me before. And none of the characters were villainized in making those points, which I definitely appreciated. Litgal did a spectacular job of creating an alternate path for things to have taken. Really, the only complaint I could possibly have about this story is that there isn't a sequel!

Better When We're Together by 1ightning (Draco/Ron | R)

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings/Characters: Draco/Ron
Rating: R
Wordcount: 12,500
Author: 1ightning
Website: Masterlist of 1ightning's fic
Summary: In which Ron is sorted into Slytherin, and it all goes to hell from there.
Why: This story combines two of my weaknesses: good Draco/Ron, and someone (in this case, Ron) getting sorted into a different house. How could I not rec it? "Better When We're Together" covers all seven years of Hogwarts, tracking the way that Draco and Ron become friends and then something more. And it's a characterization that I can completely buy for both of them with a smooth flow into more than friends territory that I was completely convinced. Even though this concept has become a bit of a cliche in the fandom, this story felt really fresh and enjoyable to me.

Spoilers for: episode 119
Author: eudaimon

Summary: Underwater, she still dreams of him. When you almost touch the bottom it's like dying, a little. It's like leaving the world.
Why: Yeah, remember the diver girl from episode 119? (Don't worry, neither did I. Here's a refresher if you're at a loss.) Well, this is a story that visits with her again, in the future, a concept that I'd never seen done before. And not only is it done, it's done well. The language the author uses is beautiful and the view of House and his fellows from the outside is compelling. This is short, but I think it'll be sticking with me for a while.

Rating: PG
Wordcount: ~700
Author: bookshop
Website: Topgallant
Summary: “What I’m about to do may alarm you,” Inui remarks. “But possibly it would be best if you attempted to enjoy it.”
Why: More characters I've missed! Even though Inui and Kaidoh are kind of my Prince of Tennis OTP, somehow I never seem to really find fics that I'm satisfied with featuring them. So this was a real treat. It's short, but the author does a great job of capturing their characters and the super cute potential of their relationship. It was a great reminder of just why I like this pairing in the first place.

Fandom: House
Pairings/Characters: House, Chase (maybe hints of House/Chase, but not too much)
Rating: G-PG
Wordcount: 1,091

Summary: House likes solving mysteries.
Why: Chase is my favorite character on House, so I've really missed him in his current 'there but not really' role. That's definitely a huge part of why I enjoyed this as much as I did. The other part is just that it's so perfectly in character for Chase and the way that House sees him. The author's style of writing is also great, short and to the point with no unnecessary words.

Author: anenko
Website: i wrote that!
Summary: Hordes of the shuffling, moaning undead were laying siege to Shirokin.
Why: I'll admit it. I will read anything Gokusen these days, as long as it's sufficiently drama-based so that it doesn't end up spoiling me for the manga (which I am making my slow way through). So obviously I couldn't resist reading this. And even though it's obviously crack, it's that kind of crack where even though the situation is ridiculous, the responses of the characters to the situation is just right. So, if you're curious about just how Shirokin would react to an invasion of zombies...well, here's your answer!
