Summary: “After all,” Yankumi sniffled, forcing her voice to be cheery, “they're called crushes because they leave you broken-hearted, right?"
Why: I have a thing about drama. Reality in fiction is great and all, but sometimes all I want is the dramatic confrontation or the heartfelt confession or the emotional blubbering that takes just a little bit of suspension of disbelief to swallow, but is so enjoyable once you do that you never regret the choice. This story is kind of like that. There are a couple places where I couldn't help but feel that it was overly dramatic, but they were just the right places for me to not mind. Also, the author has some nice insights into both Shin and Yankumi that I really enjoyed. (Not to mention that I'm obsessed enough with Shinkumi to view everything I read through rose-colored glasses...)

Summary: He had been smarter before, hadn't he?
Why: This fic cracks me up. It's exactly the kind of comedy of errors that you might expect from Yankumi and Shin, and it is absolutely hilarious. And there's really nothing else I can say except for "Go read it now!!"

Summary: Hordes of the shuffling, moaning undead were laying siege to Shirokin.
Why: I'll admit it. I will read anything Gokusen these days, as long as it's sufficiently drama-based so that it doesn't end up spoiling me for the manga (which I am making my slow way through). So obviously I couldn't resist reading this. And even though it's obviously crack, it's that kind of crack where even though the situation is ridiculous, the responses of the characters to the situation is just right. So, if you're curious about just how Shirokin would react to an invasion of zombies...well, here's your answer!

Summary: "This was all of Shin's illicit dreams of the last several months come to vivid life, and Shin had no idea what to do."
Why: If you've been reading my Gokusen recs up until this point, then you'll have realized that I'm a huge fan of Shin when he's feeling dorky and out of his depth. This fic is yet another example of that. Flustered Shin is just way too cute for his own good, and you have to love it when Yankumi takes charge. If only there were more Gokusen fics like this one!

Why: Just read that summary and try to tell me that you don't want to read this and see Shin's suffering. Seriously, this story had me snickering the entire way through. Poor Shin and his long-suffering nobility as he deals with the oblivious Yankumi. It really never ceases to amuse me. ^^

Summary: There is something about Yankumi that makes a deeply hidden, very nicely buried part of Sawada Shin want to well up and spill all over everything.
Why: Oh, man, does this ever make me giggle. Shin is just so deeply uncool and Yankumi keeps bringing it out in him and he's just soooo horrified by it all. It's adorable and cute and just about everything I want out of the pairing. Perfect!

Summary: Years down the road, Sawada Shin glowers at the whispering comments made by idiot strangers when he’s out with Kumiko.
Why: This is labeled as the first part of a series, but it since it's been two years since this part came out, I'm assuming that this is all there will be. Which is fine, because this stands alone without a problem. I really like this view of Shin and Yankumi. Shin's voice is really great, especially in the way his affection for Yankumi comes shining through. I also like the details that are included (especially the Matsumoto Jun references, I have to admit). It's too bad there's not more of this, but what there is is a nice slice of life.

Why: This is just the kind of thing that I could see happening with Yankumi, and her reaction to it is perfect. I also liked the way that the author wrote this older-but-still-the-same Shin; it rang very true to me.

Why: It's probably terribly geeky, but I really loved the structure of this. Also, the character voice is done very well. Oh, and the ending is lovely.

Summary: Scars tell a story. Where you’ve been, what you’ve gone through. Yankumi has a lot of scars.
Why: This is a really sweet story, and made even better by the fact that it's a bit longer than what I usually find for this fandom! It has Yankumi being wise in her own inimitable way that is oh-so-appealing. I always find myself inspired by Yankumi's wisdom. Also, I love Shin's reaction to what Yankumi says, and just his emotions in general when it comes to her.

Why: I like this because of the way it shows how well Shin fits into Yankumi's family. Also, Yankumi's obliviousness just amuses me. :)

Why: I'm not a huge fan of babyfic of any sort, but this just tickled my fancy. I really liked the interaction (aka bickering) between Shin and Yankumi. Also, the POV is totally snicker-worthy; you almost feel sorry for the poor punk that's ended up going against those two when you aren't busy laughing at him.

Summary: A picture is worth a thousand words.
Why: First, I think Noda is adorable, so any story that has him as a main character is alright by me. Second, I like the depth that the author added to Noda. The idea of him taking pictures obsessively really appeals to me for some reason. Finally, I'm always interested in seeing how the students react when they realize how Shin feels about Yankumi, and this story fulfills that wish quite nicely. This particular idea is a bit cliche, but as far as I'm concerned it's a good cliche, and the author does a nice job of executing it. Just thinking about this one makes me smile.

Summary: The tone of Yankumi's emails change gradually, over the months.
Why: I love the progression of the relationship between Shin and Yankumi in this story. The depth of Shin's feelings really shine through, and I love him for his patience just like I love Yankumi for her inability to see until it all suddenly dawns. I think this really might be how it happens. ♥
